Longing

Heartsickness
what a strange concept
pang of nausea
emptiness
out of nowhere
from a memory
a song
a gentle breeze
undone again

There is no equation
for how long
how strongly

we will feel
heartsick
we can gauge it by:
tears
anger
intensity
duration,
but really it is the importance
placed on what has been
lost

The sickness
the longing
can hurt more than the break
because it is not real
it is a longing for what
does not exist
what may have
never existed

I would like to think
we can measure our love
in the impact someone makes
on how we see the world

ourselves
our capacity for giving
receiving
and what we do
in the shadow of losing them

Love changes us
that is the nature of love
whether we are the person
who falls
or who receives
or both

There is no love that is
not real
there is no love
that lasts
forever
there is only our ability
to give ourselves
up to love
no matter the risk
without fear
of feeling
heartsick
