About Me
I grew up in Albuquerque, New Mexico and have loved to travel since I was little and we would pack up the car and visit family in California or Vermont. I first flew on a plane by myself when I was six years old. Being curious about the world is something that was always a part of me. Immersing myself in a new experience or place was not always easy, because I typically like to keep to myself, but there is something magical about putting on a set of headphones, listing to music, and exploring a new place.
Music has always been a passion of mine since I got my coveted first cassette of Cyndi Lauper's She's So Unusual. As a teenager, theater and music were part of my daily life. For my 21st birthday I produced and promoted with a few close friends a national DJ tour for URB Magazine. Since I have little musical talent of my own, I thought about using my organizational skills and becoming a promoter or manager for the many artists I knew, but found that working with artists required a maturity and thick skin I was lacking in my early 20s.
So, I started working for a catering company and fell in love with cooking. I thought of going to culinary school or working in a restaurant but, ultimately decided to go back to college where I could read and write and indulge my academic side. At the University of New Mexico I received Bachelor's Degrees in World History and English-Philosophy (where you basically read everything from Jane Austen to Octavia Butler and Nietzsche to Buddhist texts).
In 2006, I moved to San Francisco where I received a Master's Degree in History of the United States with a focus on gender and race. While the city won my heart and felt like home almost immediately, I decided after three years to return to Albuquerque to be close to family and have a child. Since returning home I have worked in Sustainability, local economic development, environmental advocacy, and local food production. I got married, had a daughter, got divorced and realized there had been quite a few years where I had not seen any live music or left the state. Turning that around, I started taking my daughter on a few trips a year, because the travel bug should start young, and found that seeing the world through your child's eyes is an experience of it's own.
Recently, I started doing even more traveling, for work and fun, and was able to take a few trips with friends, no kids, and go to new places. As 2019 starts, I wanted to challenge myself to go more places, listen to more live music, and get out of my shell to share my experiences. Of course, no trip is complete without delicious food, whiskey, and a lot of coffee. I hope that you enjoy sharing my journey.
